Where the Story Begins…

Your stay begins here. Find the perfect time to escape to the mountains.

The history of the cabin

The cabin was built in 1969, in a part of Big Bear that has always existed just outside the center of things. Tucked into the valley between Moonridge and Sugarloaf, West Winds Cabin was the first cabin built in this area. The land once sat on the edges of the region’s gold rush movement—near enough to feel it, far enough to remain quiet.

That quiet carries through the home. Dates are still written into the bricks. Over the years, the home has evolved—shaped by decades of ownership and care—while still holding onto the spirit of its earlier days. Today, it carries that same balance of simplicity and character, updated with intention but still connected to the landscape it’s always been part of.

Who we are

West Winds began as a feeling, not a floor plan. We wanted a place that encouraged slowness. A place shaped by weather, light, and the rhythm of the mountains. Somewhere that made room for long conversations, quiet mornings, and time spent outdoors without needing an itinerary.

At the time, much of our life existed on screens. We were craving something tangible—work that could be touched, adjusted, lived with. Creating West Winds became a way to step away from the digital and into the physical. To build, learn, and connect more deeply with a place by being part of its making.

Much of the work on the cabin was done slowly, often by hand, learning as we went. That process shaped the home as much as any plan ever could. West Winds was designed as a second home—layered, lived-in, and intentional. The furnishings were chosen to be used, not admired from a distance. The layout favors gathering as much as retreat.

We hope your time here invites you outside when the weather calls you, and back in when it doesn’t. To explore the mountains, the lake, the village—or to stay put and let nature come to you through the windows.
